A collection of seventeen essays and ten poems by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Mary Oliver, focusing on the natural world, the nature of loss, and the craft of writing.
In Long Life, Mary Oliver directs her observant eye toward the landscape that has long shaped her work: the woods, shores, and wildlife of Provincetown. Through these essays, she examines the close relationship between the natural world and the human interior life.
Alongside her nature writing, the collection includes Oliver’s personal readings and literary commentary on the authors who influenced her own voice, including William Wordsworth, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
